The English Language Arts standards establish a “staircase” of increasing complexity in what PreK to 12th grade students must be able to read and write so that students are ready for the demands of college- and career-level reading and writing no later than the end of high school. In addition, the standards require that students must be able to evaluate and present increasingly complex information through listening and speaking, as well as through the use of technology and media.
