This is a solicitation to develop a list of qualified applicants for faculty positions with benefits; faculty long-term special payroll (91-180 days); and/or faculty short-term special payroll positions (1-90 days) for vacancies as they occur.  Special Payroll positions are hourly employees with no benefits

POSITION:

Reading Specialist - Columbia Campus

 

 

NATURE OF WORK:

To implement IEP services for Elementary students; conduct initial assessment to determine if students need services and write reports with specific recommendations; coordinate services and work with Language Disorder Specialist to serve several Elementary students; provide support to Elementary classroom teachers in using the Rigby and similar reading materials for Guided Reading/Shared Reading activities; participate in the maintenance of Bilingual Education concepts throughout the School; improve professional competence through participation in staff development activities and other professional growth activities; participate in student after-school activities as appropriate; and assume other responsibilities as designated by the Supervisor of Curriculum and Instruction or Principal.

 

 

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Master’s degree in Education of Deaf – Reading or equivalent of post-baccalaureate graduate credits in reading required. Maryland State Department of Education Reading Specialist Certification required (or ability to obtain in a specific time).  Three years teaching experience preferred.  Other combinations of education, training and experience which provide the knowledge, abilities and skills necessary to perform effectively in the position may be considered.  Fluency in American Sign Language (ASL) and written English required.  Knowledge of Deaf community required.  Knowledge in identifying and using reading assessment and diagnostic tools; should be familiar with using running records (Rigby and similar reading materials). Applicant needs to work with administrators and teachers in developing a plan to help students improve reading skills; able to participate in planning meetings and provide training sessions; and able to participate in school committees.

 

 

 

SALARY:

Commensurate with education and experience (10 month position)

Application materials for initial round of interviews must be postmarked on or before May 30, 2008.  Application materials received after May 30 may be considered for future interviews.

Candidates appointed to this position will be assigned duties which require the operation of a state motor vehicle.
