MIDDLE SCHOOL
Student Council
The Student Council is a student-run organization comprised of elected student officers that meets regularly to discuss and vote on various issues. Student officers are the voice of the student body. Elected student leaders are also responsible to plan and organize assemblies, dances, and events, including community service.
HIGH SCHOOL
Class Organizations
Each grade sets up a class organization under the guidance of elected student officers and sponsors. The purpose of these class organizations is to encourage student leadership and teamwork skills through periodic meetings, cooperative activities, and fundraising events.
Deaf Youth Latinx Club
The purpose of the Deaf Youth Latinx Club is to prepare the next generation of deaf and hard of hearing persons of Latin heritage to serve in a diverse community. The organization aims to embrace, promote, and educate about Latin culture and history, to increase awareness and self-esteem of cultural values, and to learn about one’s own self-identity and family heritage. Students have opportunities to lead and participate in educational projects and regular discussions of current issues surrounding the Latin community.
Dorm Leaders
The purpose of the Dorm Leaders is to provide a sense of community in the residence halls and to help create a ‘home-away-from-home’ culture for our residential students. Dorm Leaders is a peer support program that connects new students with current residential students in order to help them get acclimated to living in a community setting. Dorm Leaders serve as mentors and role models to other students, and are also trained to help with a variety of special events and functions on campus.
Gender & Sexuality Alliance
The Gender & Sexuality Alliance is a student-run organization open to all high school students, regardless of sexual orientation or gender identity. The organization aims to provide and advocate for a positive and safe environment that encourages awareness, acceptance, and respect for all. Students participate in educational activities and regular discussions of current issues surrounding the LGBTQ community.
Junior BDA
The purpose of the Junior BDA, Junior Black Deaf Advocates, is to prepare the next generation of Black deaf and hard of hearing leaders to serve in a diverse community. The organization aims to increase self-esteem in cultural values and to continue to build awareness about being a Black deaf or hard of hearing individual in today’s society. Students have opportunities to lead and participate in educational activities and regular discussions of current issues surrounding the black community.
Junior NAD
The Junior NAD, a program of the National Association of the Deaf, offers middle school and high school students opportunities to develop leadership skills, learn and demonstrate citizenship, and meet and interact with students from other schools and states. Members focus on advocacy, awareness, and information exchange. Skills and values obtained by chapter members during these meetings and events will help them become future leaders and advocates in the deaf and hard of hearing community.
MSD Cadet Corps
Using a military-style structure, fitness, and discipline, MSD Cadet Corps introduces cadets to the personal challenges and competencies that are critical for effective leadership. The focus is on developing basic knowledge and comprehension of military leadership dimensions, attributes and core leader competencies while gaining an understanding of the US armed forces, its personnel and its purpose in our Country. Cadets explore the dimensions of creative and innovative tactical leadership strategies and styles by examining team dynamics and squad tactics. Cadets are also introduced to the advocacy for a Congressional demonstration program for deaf and hard of hearing Americans to serve in the US armed forces.
National Honor Society
National Honor Society is the nation’s premier organization established to recognize outstanding high school students who have demonstrated excellence in the areas of scholarship, service, leadership, and character. Members achieve and maintain a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher and are committed to the school through activities, clubs, and community service.
Student Body Government
The Student Body Government is a student-run organization comprised of elected student officers that meets regularly to discuss and vote on various issues. Student officers are the voice of the student body. They have the opportunity to participate in discussions to propose new ideas and other issues of concern to the student body with the MSD administration. Elected student leaders are also responsible to plan and organize assemblies, dances, and events, including Homecoming and Spirit Week.
Student Leaders
Student Leaders serve as the “first face” of MSD High School. They personalize campus tours to inform visitors, students, and families about MSD’s academics and extracurricular programs. Their enthusiasm and helpfulness makes visitors of all kinds feel welcome. Student Leaders are trained through leadership and team-building activities to coordinate, lead, and assist with a variety of workshops, special events, and functions on campus.
