On Jan. 28, our Columbia campus robotics team visited Annapolis, where they were honored by the Senate and the House of Delegates of the Maryland General Assembly. This special recognition celebrated the robotics club's successful inaugural season during the 2023-2024 school year.
Joined by Superintendent John A. Serrano, Columbia's Chief Educational Programs Officer Dawniela Halischak, and Middle School Principal Shannon Negussie, the students also had the unique opportunity to witness democracy in action as they observed floor proceedings in both the House and Senate at the Maryland State House. This provided a valuable learning experience, allowing students to see firsthand how the two legislative chambers operate.
During the visit, Zachary Thompson, accompanied by CTE teacher and robotics club head coach Brian Suchite, was invited to the House Floor, where Delegate Vanessa Atterbeary of Howard County presented them with a resolution in recognition of their accomplishments.
The robotics team was then invited to the Senate floor, where Senator Guy Guzzone of Howard County, who also serves as the Chairman of Budget and Taxation Committee, presented the club with a resolution on behalf of the Senate.
The group also visited The Archives Room at the State House, where they learned more about our state's history.
Congratulations to Dagmawi Andualem, Jagger Chamberlin, Kishawn Dixon, Caitlyn Reyes, and Zachary Thompson on receiving this well-deserved honor! This recognition is a testament to their hard work, dedication, and passion for learning. Special appreciation goes to head coach Brian Suchite and assistant coaches Kelly Romano and Christopher Webb for their leadership and dedication to our robotics club.
We extend our heartfelt gratitude to our state leaders for taking the time to welcome and recognize the remarkable achievements of our students and staff.
