Extended School Year Services

Each year at your child's Annual IEP Meeting, the IEP team will review whether your child qualifies for Extended School Year (ESY) services. ESY provides special education and/or related services beyond the regular school year so your child can continue building on important skills and avoid losing progress.

If "Extended School Year" is listed as a purpose on your IEP meeting invitation, it means the team will include ESY in the discussion at the meeting. It does not mean a decision has already been made.

The team looks at your child's individual needs and data to determine eligibility, which may include:
  • Risk of significant skill loss (regression)
  • Difficulty regaining skills (recoupment)
  • Critical life skills and emerging abilities
  • Unique circumstances that impact learning
If your child qualifies, the IEP will outline specific goals and services for ESY. If not, the team will document the decision and the reasons why.

ESY is not the same as summer school; it is tailored to your child's IEP goals and individualized needs.

If you have questions about ESY, please contact your child's department principal or the Supervisor of IEP Services.
