Parents’ Guide to Habilitative Services

Habilitative services are therapies designed for children who have a genetic condition or a condition present from birth. These services focus on supporting children in developing skills for the very first time, such as walking, talking, or self-feeding.

They are similar to rehabilitative services, but with one key difference:

Rehabilitative services: Re-learning a skill that was once acquired but later lost due to illness or injury.

Habilitative services: Learning a skill that has not yet been developed.

Understanding these services can provide families a clearer picture of options for their child's care and development.
