What is Allyship?
What is an Ally?
Being an ally is more than just saying "I agree" and "I stand with you". Allyship calls for a person from a non-marginalized group to actively and consistently use their privilege to advocate against acts of injustice affecting a marginalized group.
What is Performative Allyship?
When a person from a non-marginalized group uses their privilege to show support and solidarity with marginalized groups, but usually in a way that is not helpful or could essentially be harmful to that group. People engaging in performative allyship are often those who post on social media but do not do the required work such as getting involved beyond just posting. For example, posting the hashtag #sayhisname, but then not making the necessary phone calls to fight for injustice, is considered an act of performative allyship.
